Short Term Volunteer Assignment: Environmental Impact Evaluation Specialist for Dominican Republic I occasionally am asked to help find experts for Volunteer Short Term Technical Assignments. The two volunteer assignments below (Environmental Impact Evaluation Specialist) are needed by Partners of the Americas in Washington DC. Partners’ USAID-funded Farmer to Farmer Program. The program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers, organizations, agribusinesses and universities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Through the program, U.S. specialists donate their time and expertise and spend two to three weeks on specific technical assignments, working directly with counterparts in the region to address local needs. Volunteers may travel individually or in teams. The Program covers all costs of airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and any work related expenses. Position Title: Environmental Impact Evaluation Specialist Location: Dominican Republic Date of Assignment: Fall 2011 Assignment Summary: Partners has been working with greenhouse growers throughout the Dominican Republic. These greenhouses range from small family-run structures to large commercial greenhouses. There is a need to do a better assessment of the environmental impacts of greenhouses and vegetable production. The volunteer will: a. Conduct training with technicians on environmental impact assessment, specifically for vegetable production in greenhouses b. Assess the present situation of greenhouses in relation to meeting the environmental regulations Volunteer Qualifications; a. Experience in developing environmental impact assessment plans for the production of vegetables produced in greenhouses b. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful (but not required) c. US Citizenship is required Expected Results and Deliverables: a. Agricultural professionals will be trained on environmental impact assessment for the production of vegetables produced in greenhouses. b. Greenhouses assessed in relation to meeting environmental regulations c. Trip Report assessing the current plans of Greenhouses to be completed d. Recommendations and observations made throughout their assignment by specialist. e. Specialist will train technicians on environmental impact assessment for the production of vegetables produced in greenhouses.
