Short Term Volunteer Assignment: Soil Conservation Specialist for Dominican Republic I occasionally am asked to help find experts for Volunteer Short Term Technical Assignments. The two volunteer assignments below (Beeswax Specialist and Packaging and Labeling Specialists) are needed by Partners of the Americas in Washington DC. Partners’ USAID-funded Farmer to Farmer Program. The program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers, organizations, agribusinesses and universities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Through the program, U.S. specialists donate their time and expertise and spend two to three weeks on specific technical assignments, working directly with counterparts in the region to address local needs. Volunteers may travel individually or in teams. The Program covers all costs of airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and any work related expenses.
Position Title: Soil Conservation Specialist
Location: Dominican Republic
Dates of Assignment: Fall 2011 Assignment
Summary: Throughout the Dominican Republic, many people live on hillsides and due to factors such as heavy rain and deforestation, there has been a perpetual issue of soil erosion. This particularly impacts crop production.
This assignment is for a volunteer to: a. Assess the environmental conditions, soil conservation and soil management situation of the areas in San Jose de Ocoa and Padre Las Casas. b. Identify the appropriate methods, practices and technologies that should be used by farmers for soil conservation and management. c. Train farmers and technicians on appropriate methods and techniques for the production of vegetables and fruit trees on hillsides”.
Volunteer Qualifications: a. Experience with soil conservation methods, technologies, soil science, and erosion prevention b. Experience with providing training to farmers and technicians in the above technical areas. c. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful (but not required) d. US Citizenship Required
Expected Results and Deliverables: a. Local farmers and technicians will improve their knowledge and prevent soil erosion. b. The volunteer specialist will be able to provide recommendations on methods and technologies that will improve the production on hillsides. c. Volunteer will prepare Trip Report assessing the current stance of hillside erosion. d. Observations and recommendations to prevent or slow down the erosion process.
