I have been asked to help find another expert for Volunteer Short Term Technical Assignment in Guyana.
Position Title: Crop Nursery Specialist
Location: Guyana
Potential Dates of Assignment: Fall/Winter 2011 --- assignments to last a few weeks.
The volunteer assignment below (Crop Nursery Specialist) is needed by Partners of the Americas in Washington DC and is part of Partners’ USAID-funded Farmer to Farmer Program. The program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers, organizations, agribusinesses and universities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the program, U.S. specialists donate their time and expertise and spend two to three weeks on specific technical assignments, working directly with counterparts in the region to address local needs. Volunteers may travel individually or in teams. The Program covers all costs of airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and any work related expenses.
Assignment Summary:
Many Guyanese farmers face difficult challenges since their soil is not rich. As a result, a number have turned to hydroponic shadehouses in order to grow their crops. This assignment will work with five nurseries operators and also work with private hydroponic shadehouse operators to determine the best practices related to how to deal with seedlings just acquired from a nursery and appropriate aspects of post nursery management in a hydroponic shadehouse management system. The substrate used by hydroponic shadehouse operators in Guyana comprises paddy husk and sand.
- 1.Volunteer Qualifications Requirements:
- Volunteer must have “technical knowledge and experience” in:
- Nursery development / establishment and expansion primarily nurseries geared to provide plants for hydroponic vegetable production
- Propagation
- Preparation of growing media
- Potting and transplanting of seedlings
- Pest and disease management
- Volunteer should also have the following “nursery knowledge and experience”:
- Nursery nutrient requirement inclusive of ‘hydroponic-focused nursery’
- Nursery materials and equipment
- Nursery irrigation systems
- Nursery record keeping
- Experience in working in tropical conditions and with limited resources will be useful.
- Volunteer must be a US Citizen
- 2.Expected Deliverables:
- Trip Report
- Hands- on training
- An assessment on other types of training necessary and identify profiles for future Farmer to Farmer volunteers in terms of nursery management.
