Title:  Grape Production Expert

Location:  Dominican Republic

Preferred Start Date:  February 2012--- assignments to last a few weeks.

The Short Term assignment below is to fulfill requirements of Partners’ USAID-funded Farmer to Farmer Program.   The program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers, organizations, agribusinesses and universities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Through the program, U.S. specialists donate their time and expertise and spend two to three weeks on specific technical assignments, working directly with counterparts in the region to address local needs. Volunteers may travel individually or in teams. The Program covers all costs of airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and any work related expenses.  It does not compensate for daily or hourly consultant fees.

 

Assignment Summary:

Training farmers and technicians in modern techniques of grape production: climate, site selection, varieties, soil preparation, planting material, planting, vine spacing,  management practices: trellis systems, pruning, vine nutrition,  vine floor management, irrigation, pest management,  table grape quality, harvesting and yields, marketing.

 

Volunteer Qualifications Requirements:

  1. Experience in training farmers and technicians in modern technologies of grape production
  2. Knowledge of Spanish preferred
  3. US citizenship is required

 

Expected Results:

§  Farmers and technicians able to produce a good grape crop

§  Become more familiar with modern techniques of grape production

Expected Deliverables:

  • Trained farmers and technicians in grape production
  • Farmer to Farmer trip report
